Our Story

In early 2025, Jessica Preece was concerned about the state of our country and found herself wondering what she could do. “There are a thousand different ways to use our voices to keep democracy alive,” she says, and she wanted to do something purposeful and tangible that would bring women together.

Inspired by generations of women who have gathered, quilted, and used other means available to them to create political and social change, Jessica, a quilter herself, decided to host a quilt-in. Quilting for the Constitution: Peace by Piece was born.

The idea spoke to women across the country. Hundreds came together, writing messages to their members of Congress on fabric squares, each one a constituent letter. Together, we stitched those squares into quilts, carried them to Washington, D.C., and placed them directly into the hands of our representatives.

What began with one woman asking what she could do became something much bigger: Women Building Peace.

We are grateful to every woman who has joined us, adding her distinct voice and talents to stitch our hearts, our nation, and our Constitution together, peace by piece.

Women Building Peace is a cross-partisan community of women who believe democracy is strongest when it’s built, not just defended. We provide hands-on, creative opportunities for civic engagement through quilting, postcard writing, and community gatherings. Our campaigns turn conviction into something tangible people can see and hold.

With the belief that ordinary people can make extraordinary change, we welcome people of every political affiliation and background who share a commitment to strengthening communities and building peace.
